Megapnosaurus (β€žgroße tote Echseβ€œ), frΓΌher Syntarsus, ist eine Gattung kleiner theropoder Dinosaurier aus dem frΓΌhen Unterjura, die den Coelophysis-Arten sehr Γ€hneln.

Bislang wurden zwei Arten beschrieben, Megapnosaurus rhodesiensis als Syntarsus rhodesiensis 1969cite-ref-2[2] und Megapnosaurus kayentakatae als Syntarsus kayentakatae 1989cite-ref-3[3].

Im Jahr 2001 wurde Syntarsus von den Entomologen Ivie, Slipinski und Wegrzynowicz in Megapnosaurus umbenannt, nachdem sich herausgestellt hatte, dass der ursprΓΌngliche Gattungsname bereits 1869 fΓΌr einen KΓ€fer vergeben worden war (Syntarsus (Raath, 1969)).cite-ref-4[4]

Merkmale

Megapnosaurus unterscheidet sich von Coelophysis unter anderem durch seine verwachsenen Fußknochen, seine etwas geringere Grâße sowie durch die zwei halbmondfârmigen KnochenkÀmme auf dem SchÀdel. Bei gut zwei Metern LÀnge erreichte er ein Gewicht von ungefÀhr 15 Kilogramm.

Systematik

Megapnosaurus gehΓΆrt zur Coelophysoidea, einer Gruppe primitiver Theropoden. Er ist sehr nahe mit Coelophysis verwandt. Kladogramm nach Tykoski und Rowe (2004):cite-ref-5[5]
